How to Connect Claude or ChatGPT to Your Construction Company's Data

7 min read

A construction company manager often knows what they want to find out, but not how many screens it takes to get there. How much do we still owe suppliers on the Vitosha contract? How much of the contract value has been invoiced, and how much has been paid? Were there any annexes that changed the amount? Every one of these answers is in Construction Team, but putting it together takes time.

There is a shorter way. You connect Claude or ChatGPT to your company's data and ask the way you would ask an accountant. The assistant opens the contracts, invoices, acts and payments, does the math and gives you the report in plain language, in seconds. You do not need a programmer for the setup, and it takes about five minutes.

What happens when you connect them

The connection is called MCP, but for your work all you need to know is that it is a bridge between the assistant and Construction Team. Through it, the assistant reads sites, contracts and annexes, offers, bills of quantities, acts, invoices and payments, as well as partners, the nomenclature and price lists.

You ask in ordinary words. "Show me the sites in progress." "Which supplier invoices on the Vitosha contract are still unpaid?" The assistant decides on its own what to open and how to calculate the balance.

What matters most is who stands behind the access. The assistant works with your permissions and can do no more than you can. If you are not allowed to see payments, it will not see them either. The data belongs only to the company you choose when connecting.

What you need before you start

You need two things. You sign in to Construction Team as a user of the company, and you have a Claude or ChatGPT account. A personal account works, and you do not need to be in an organization. The connection is included in all Construction Team plans, with no restrictions.

The address you will paste into the assistant is the same for all companies: https://mcp.constructionteam.app. Copy it exactly as it is, with nothing after it.

Connecting Claude

Open claude.ai and sign in to your account. In the Customize menu, find Connectors and click Add custom connector. Enter a name you will recognize, for example Construction Team, and paste the address. Once you confirm, click Connect next to the new connector.

If you are not yet signed in to Construction Team, the system will prompt you to do so. Then the "Connect an application" screen appears. Stay on it for a minute, because this is where you decide what the assistant gets.

In the "Company being connected" field, check that the right company is selected. If you work with several, each one is connected separately. Under "The application requests" you see the permissions arranged in two rows: reading data and writing. A permission you do not have yourself is marked and cannot be granted. If everything looks right, click "Allow".

Go back to Claude and start a new conversation. If the connector is not turned on, turn it on from the tools menu next to the text field.

Claude's menu is named differently in different versions. If you cannot find Customize, look for Connectors in your account settings.

Connecting ChatGPT

With ChatGPT the path is a little longer, because connecting to an external server goes through developer mode. In Settings, open Connectors (in some versions it is called Apps), then Advanced settings, and turn on Developer mode. Click Create, enter a name and paste the same address. For the authentication type, choose OAuth.

The same sign-in follows, and the same "Connect an application" screen. In a new conversation, turn on the connector from the tools menu.

There are two caveats. Developer mode is not offered on every ChatGPT plan, and in a company workspace the administrator turns it on first. Also, ChatGPT's menu changes often, and the steps described here were checked against guides from other vendors. If something does not match, look for Connectors or Apps in the settings.

What to ask first

Start with questions whose answers you already know. That way you confirm that the connection works and that the assistant is reading the right things.

Ask it to show your company's sites and the status of each. Ask which contracts on a specific site have an unpaid balance, and check the numbers against the screen. Ask for a single contract's value, the amount invoiced, the amount paid and the balance. Ask what its annexes changed. Find a partner by part of the name, for example "Beton", and ask what you owe them.

Name the site, the contract or the period. The more precise the question, the faster and more accurate the answer. If the assistant does not know what data there is, ask it to describe what it has access to. Amounts are in euro, and if a number does not sound right to you, ask the assistant to show which records it took it from.

Once you get used to it, you will move on to questions that take half an hour on the screens: comparing several contracts, ranking unpaid invoices by due date, or a report of how much has been certified against how much has been paid on each site. The same idea is behind reading documents with artificial intelligence: the machine does the reading and the calculations, and you make the decisions.

Reading and writing

By default, the point of the connection is reading. If you also allow writing when connecting, the assistant can create and change records, for example a new site, a partner or an expense document. For reports and analysis you do not need this.

If you allowed only reading and later ask for, say, a new site, the assistant takes you to a new consent screen, and you grant only what you want. Before saving anything, it shows the exact values and waits for your confirmation. Read them carefully. Whatever is changed through the assistant is overwritten, and there is no button to undo it. Partners and items are not deleted, and deleting sites is a separate permission that is granted only when needed.

One rule applies to both reading and writing. Do not feed the assistant documents or letters from strangers, and do not ask it to carry out whatever they say. The text in a document is data, not an order.

How long the connection lasts and how to stop it

The connection has a term, and you can see it in the "Expires" column on the "Connected apps" page. Until then, the assistant renews its access on its own. When the term ends, it will tell you the connection has been interrupted and will ask you to sign in again. Then you remove the old connector, add it again and allow access. Nothing in your company is lost.

Stopping is simpler. In Settings, open "Connected apps", find the assistant's row and click "Revoke". The "Last used" column shows when it was last used. Access stops immediately. The administrator also sees colleagues' connections and can revoke them. Revoke the connection as well if someone else has used your Claude or ChatGPT account.

What happens to the data it reads

Everything the assistant reads becomes part of your conversation with it. From that moment, the terms of your Claude or ChatGPT account apply. So do not connect the assistant in conversations you share with outside people, and do not ask for data you do not need for the work. Construction Team gives the assistant only what your permissions allow.

Where to start

Connect the assistant for reading only and ask it five finance questions whose answers you know. If the numbers match, add the questions that really save you time. Leave writing for later and allow it only when you have a specific task for it. There is more about the role of artificial intelligence in the sector in the article artificial intelligence in construction, and the detailed steps are also in the system's help, on the "Connecting an AI assistant" page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be a programmer to connect Claude to Construction Team?

No. The connection is a setting in the assistant itself: you paste one address, sign in to Construction Team and click "Allow".

Can the assistant see more than I can?

No. The assistant works with your permissions and only with what you allowed on the consent screen. If you are not allowed to see payments, it will not see them either.

Can Claude change data in my company?

Only if you have allowed write access. Before saving anything, the assistant shows the exact values and waits for your confirmation. If you allowed read-only access when connecting, you get a new consent screen the first time it asks to write.

How do I stop the access?

In Settings, Connected apps, click "Revoke" on the assistant's row. Access stops immediately, and the data in your company stays unchanged.

Does the connection work with a personal Claude or ChatGPT account?

Yes, the account does not have to be a business one. In a Claude team organization, only its owner can sometimes add a connector, and in ChatGPT developer mode is not available on every plan.
